Biradari alone is a blunt instrument. The families who match quickly combine it with sect, city, education level and profession, which turns a list of hundreds into a handful worth approaching.

A word on biradari and character. Shared biradari predicts shared customs around weddings and households. It predicts nothing at all about kindness, honesty or how a family treats a daughter-in-law. Families who lean on it as a proxy for character are regularly surprised, which is why the verification steps below still matter.

Questions families ask about Awan proposals

Do you have Awan profiles?

Yes. Awan is one of the biradaris listed on the site, and you can filter on it directly alongside sect, city, education and profession. Numbers change weekly as members join and matched members close their profiles, so rather than quote a figure that would be stale by the time you read it, register free and search for yourself.

Is anyone in the family serving?

If so, ask about postings. Life in a cantonment in Quetta, Kharian or Okara is a different marriage from settled life in Rawalpindi, and the family will usually know exactly what the next few years look like. Ask them to tell you.

Is the accommodation tied to the posting?

Very often it is, which means the house, the neighbourhood and the schools all change when the posting does, and all of it ends at retirement. A household that has thought about where it will live afterwards is a household that has thought ahead generally.

Which district is the family from?

Chakwal, Jhelum, Attock, Talagang and Mianwali across the Salt Range, with a heavy presence in Rawalpindi. Punjabi is usual, with Hindko in parts of Attock, and the district often matters more to the extended family than the current posting does.

What is the haq mehr, and how much of it is prompt?

Two separate questions and both belong in the nikah nama. Prompt dower is payable on demand at any time during the marriage; deferred dower is payable on death or divorce. If the split is not recorded, it is decided later by custom and circumstance rather than by what anybody intended. The section below explains why the entry matters so much.

Can I search Awan profiles overseas as well as in Pakistan?

Yes, and most families do. Set the country filter to open and you will see Awan members settled in the UK, Canada, the Gulf, Europe and Australia alongside those at home. Many of the strongest matches on this site are between a settled household abroad and one in Pakistan.

Is marrying outside the biradari acceptable here?

That is entirely your family’s decision and we take no position on it. What we do is make the preference visible: biradari is an open field on every profile, so a family that wants to stay within Awan can filter for it, and a family that is willing to look wider simply does not.

What about photographs?

Locked, on every profile, until that member personally accepts a request. Many families here share none at all, and a profile without photographs is listed identically to any other.

Before you meet

None of this is adversarial. Both families are doing it, and doing it openly is faster and less awkward than finding out slowly through rumour.

Marrying into a household that moves

Where there is a serving officer in the family, the posting cycle shapes the marriage more than anything on the profile does. It is a good life and a demanding one, and the families who do well are the ones who described it accurately in advance.

What a posting actually changes

Every two or three years, in broad terms, the household moves. That means the house, the city, the neighbours, the schools, the doctor, the market and the entire local support network change together, and they change on somebody else timetable. For a bride who has lived in one city her whole life, the first move is the one that tells her what she has agreed to, and it usually comes within the first two years.

It also means long separations. Courses, field postings and operational deployments take the husband away for weeks or months at a stretch, and during those periods she is running the household, often in a city where she knows almost nobody, frequently with a young child. That is not a reason to decline. It is a reason to be certain she has heard it described honestly, by somebody who has lived it, before the nikah rather than afterwards.

The questions worth asking

How long has the current posting left to run, and where is the next one expected. Is the accommodation tied to the posting. Where do the extended family actually live, and would she be with them during separations or on her own. What happens to a job or a degree of hers when the household moves; is the expectation that she continues, pauses or gives it up, and has anybody asked her. Where does the family intend to live after retirement, which is a question many households have genuinely never discussed. And what medical and schooling arrangements come with the posting, which matters enormously and varies.

The part that is a real advantage

Service households are unusually good at this conversation, because they have had it before and because the facts are not mysterious to them. A family that can tell you the next three postings with reasonable confidence, what the accommodation is, and what happened to the last bride who joined the household is giving you better information than almost any civilian proposal can. Ask them. They will generally tell you, in detail, and the detail is the reassurance.

And the Salt Range stays in the picture

Whatever the posting, Chakwal, Jhelum, Attock, Talagang and Mianwali are usually where the family is from and where the land, the house and the older generation remain. A bride marrying a serving officer is often marrying into two places at once: wherever the posting currently is, and the district the family returns to for every wedding, funeral and Eid. Ask how often that is and what is expected of her there, because it is a real and recurring part of the year.

Haq mehr: the figure, the split, and the one entry that decides it

Dower is the bride right, it is settled at the nikah, and it is the item most often filled in casually by whoever is holding the pen. Five minutes of attention at the table is worth more than any amount of argument afterwards.

Prompt and deferred are different promises

Dower is normally split into a prompt portion and a deferred portion. The prompt portion is payable on demand, and the wife may demand it at any time during the marriage. The deferred portion is payable on death or on divorce, and she cannot demand it while the marriage subsists. When the marriage ends by death or divorce the distinction falls away and she becomes entitled to whatever remains unpaid; where the marriage was consummated, that is the whole of the unpaid dower, prompt and deferred together.

What happens if nobody records the split

It gets decided for you, later, by somebody else. Where the parties have not settled how much is prompt and how much deferred, the position under Shia law is that the entire dower is prompt. Under Sunni law it is divided according to custom, and where there is no established custom, according to the status of the parties and the amount fixed. That is a perfectly workable rule and it is not what either family had in mind on the day. Recording the split takes one line.

The nikah nama is the evidence

This is the part worth knowing. Dower is recovered by suit in the Family Court under the West Pakistan Family Courts Act 1964, through section 5 and the Schedule, and section 17 of that Act relaxes the strict rules of evidence that would otherwise apply under the Qanun-e-Shahadat Order 1984. The practical effect is that a court can act on the nikah nama entry on the balance of probabilities, and where a husband does not rebut it, the entry is not something the court can ignore. A properly completed nikah nama is therefore close to self-proving, and a blank or vague one is an argument about what was meant, years later, in front of a judge.

Where a separate agreement comes in

Families sometimes write a further document alongside the nikah nama, recording gold, cash, property or a house. Courts have treated such a document as additional to the nikah nama rather than as a replacement for it, so both instruments can stand together. If your family is going to write one, write it properly, have it witnessed, and make sure the nikah nama points to it.

How much, and the honest advice

The amount is for the two families, and the range in Pakistan runs from a token sum to gold, land and a house. What is worth avoiding is the two failure modes. A nominal figure set to keep the ceremony smooth leaves the bride with nothing that means anything, and it is usually the bride side that proposes it out of politeness. A figure set so high that nobody expects it to be paid is not a promise at all, and the deferred column fills up with a number everybody privately discounts.

Set an amount both families actually intend, say how much of it is prompt, hand the prompt portion over, and write all of it down. That is a twenty-minute conversation that removes an entire category of future dispute, and in a service family, where the household will be moving and papers get lost in the moving, keeping a certified copy of the registered nikah nama somewhere safe is worth doing on the same day.
