Rishta in Malmö
Malmö’s Pakistani community lives on both sides of the Öresund — and the two sides of that bridge run entirely different, and very unequal, marriage rules.
Matrimonial matches in Malmö
A small population with strong links to the Danish community, and one practical question behind almost every rishta here: which country is the sponsor actually registered in.
Pakistani families in Malmö are concentrated around Rosengård, Hyllie, Limhamn. Professionally, the profiles we see from here cluster in healthcare, trade, IT, education — which matters, because most families searching a rishta in Malmö filter on profession before anything else.
Öresund families often treat Malmö and Copenhagen as one community, and socially they are right. Legally they are not: a spouse application made from Malmö and one made from Copenhagen are governed by different statutes, different age bars and different money tests, and the Danish side is materially harder. Establish which side of the water the sponsor is registered on before anything else is discussed.
On ByahMe, a Malmö profile shows everything a family actually needs to judge a match: age, height, education, profession, caste and biradari, sect, family type, father’s occupation, and written partner preferences. What stays hidden is the photograph and the WhatsApp number. Those unlock only when the member accepts your request — one request, one decision, no messaging, no back-and-forth with strangers.

What a Malmö rishta actually involves
None of this is legal advice, and on this page that warning carries double weight, because two national systems meet here. The Swedish rules below come from the Migration Agency, the Swedish Tax Agency and the Riksdag; the Danish ones are summarised only to show how different they are, and nothing here should be read as Danish advice. If your household straddles the bridge, get advice on the correct side of it.
Thirty-five minutes to another legal system
Malmö and Copenhagen function as one labour market and, for a lot of Pakistani families, one social world. Cousins on both sides, the same weddings, the same shops, the train across the bridge in a little over half an hour. For a rishta, that single fact is the most useful and the most dangerous thing on this page.
Useful, because it roughly doubles the pool. A Malmö family that opens the search to Copenhagen is looking at a far larger and much older Pakistani community than Sweden has, and a match across the water does not mean a bride moving to a different life — it means a different commute.
Dangerous, because the paperwork does not cross the bridge with the people. Denmark’s spousal reunification rules are built on quite different foundations from Sweden’s, and they are considerably harder. Under the Danish rule universally known as the twenty-four-year rule, both spouses must be at least twenty-four before a non-resident spouse can live with a partner in Denmark. The couple’s combined attachment to Denmark must be stronger than to the country of origin, with exemptions for people born in Denmark and for those who acquired Danish citizenship as young children and have lived there a long time. The Danish spouse must demonstrate they can support the household, which has meant income at a multiple of the welfare rate, a substantial financial guarantee adjusted annually, no welfare benefits received in the preceding year and no debts to the authorities. And the couple must own or rent a home with no more than two people per room and at least twenty square metres per person.
Set that beside the Swedish position on the same four points. Sweden requires both partners to be over twenty-one, not twenty-four. Sweden has no attachment test of that kind. Sweden does not ask for a financial guarantee; it asks what is left each month after tax and rent. And Sweden sets no minimum floor area at all — two adults need a kitchen or kitchenette and at least one room — while Denmark counts square metres per person.
Which is why the first question on this page is not about the biodata. It is: in which country is the sponsor registered. A family in Pakistan told that the boy is in Malmö and works in Copenhagen has learned almost nothing about the timeline until that is answered.
Rosengård, Hyllie and the Limhamn end
Malmö is a small city and the three areas on this page are genuinely different places.
Rosengård, east of the centre, is the older and denser concentration: municipal housing from the sixties, the most established migrant institutional life in the city, and the cheapest rents of the three. Hyllie is the newer end, south-west, built out around the station on the bridge line — modern blocks, higher rents, and a ten-minute train to the tunnel. Limhamn, out on the western shore, is quieter and largely owner-occupied.
For a spouse application the rent in each is a different number, and since the Swedish test deducts rent before measuring what remains, the area a couple live in can decide an application on identical wages. A young man in Hyllie may be worse placed than the same man in Rosengård. That is an uncomfortable thing to say to a family comparing addresses by prestige, and it is true.
Which country’s rules actually apply to you
This is the section to read twice if there are relatives on both sides.
The rules that govern bringing a wife from Pakistan are the rules of the country where the sponsor is resident and registered, not the country where he earns his salary. A man registered in Malmö who commutes to a job in Copenhagen is, for this purpose, in the Swedish system: Swedish age bar, Swedish maintenance test, Swedish housing condition, Swedish waiting time. A man registered in Copenhagen is in the Danish system, whatever side of the water his cousins live on.
Two mistakes follow from getting this wrong, and both are common here. The first is a family in Pakistan being quoted a relative’s Danish experience — the twenty-four-year wait, the guarantee, the square metres — and concluding a Swedish match is impossible when it is not. The second, and the costlier one, is the reverse: a Copenhagen household being reassured with Swedish figures and discovering the Danish attachment requirement and the age of twenty-four when the nikah has already happened.
Ask for the personnummer or the CPR number, in effect. Ask which country’s tax return he files. Ask which authority issued the residence card he holds. Those three answers settle it, and they are not intrusive questions when a marriage is being arranged across a border.
The four-month certificate that sets the wedding date
If the wedding is to happen in Sweden, one document governs the calendar and families habitually leave it too late.
Before any marriage in Sweden the Swedish Tax Agency carries out hindersprovning, its consideration of impediments to marriage. It is free. It checks three things: that neither party is under eighteen, that they are not closely related, and that neither is already married or in a registered partnership. If both are over eighteen, both are in the population register and both can sign with a Swedish e-identification, it can be done through the online service and finished as soon as both have signed. Otherwise it is form SKV 7880, signed in original and submitted by post or at a state service centre.
Where the bride is in Pakistan and not registered in Sweden, the Agency wants a specific bundle: documentation from a public authority in her country of residence showing there is no impediment under Swedish law, proof that she is over eighteen such as a passport showing her date of birth, the sworn affidavit in the form confirming the two are not closely related, and a marital status certificate — preferably issued within the last four months — showing she is not already married, plus a divorce decree or a death certificate if there was an earlier marriage.
Then the constraint. The certificate that comes out of the process is valid for four months and cannot be extended. If the wedding does not happen inside those four months, the whole application is made again. So the order of operations is: assemble the Pakistani documents first, apply for hindersprovning once they are in hand, and set the date comfortably inside the four months — not the other way round. After the ceremony it is the officiant who completes the wedding certificate and returns it to the Tax Agency, and only an officiant authorised by Kammarkollegiet, in a congregation that holds the right to conduct legally valid ceremonies, can do that.
The cousin rule, and why the bridge does not help
Since 1 July 2026 Swedish law prohibits marriage between cousins and marriage where one partner is a direct descendant of the other’s siblings, and a cousin marriage concluded abroad will as a rule not be recognised in Sweden. Among families whose relatives are spread across Öresund, that is being discussed constantly and often inaccurately, so two things are worth saying carefully.
First, what it means on the Swedish side. The Tax Agency’s impediment check specifically examines whether the parties are closely related, so a cousin couple cannot be married in Sweden. And because a residence permit to join a partner rests on a marriage or relationship Sweden accepts, a cousin nikah performed in Pakistan will as a rule leave the application with nothing to stand on. If a nikah was performed before July 2026, that is a question of transitional provisions and specific dates, and it needs a Swedish lawyer rather than a web page or a relative’s opinion.
Second, what it does not mean. It is not a rule about the biradari. Families who marry within the biradari but outside the cousinhood are unaffected. And it is a Swedish rule: Denmark legislates for itself, this page does not state the Danish position, and a family registered on that side must check their own country’s law rather than assume it mirrors Sweden’s in either direction. In a city where half the relatives are in another jurisdiction, the temptation is to take the answer that suits from whichever side gives it. Take the answer from the side you are actually registered in, in writing, from somebody qualified.
What a Malmö profile should say about the bridge
Residency status is an open field on every profile on this site, and in Malmö it carries more information than anywhere else in Scandinavia — provided people fill it in precisely.
The useful version states the country of registration, the status held there and how long it has been held: Swedish citizen; permanent resident in Sweden; holder of a Swedish permit with this much time left; or registered in Denmark. The unhelpful version says Malmö and leaves a family in Rawalpindi to assume the rest.
Say the work situation separately, because here it genuinely is separate. Working in Copenhagen while registered in Malmö is completely normal, it is not a red flag, and it does not change which country’s marriage rules apply — but it does mean the salary arrives in Danish kroner, the tax return is filed on one side and the maintenance test is assessed on the other, and the paperwork takes a little more assembling. A profile that explains that in two lines saves everybody a month of confusion, and a family reading it learns something real about how organised the household is.

Filter down to Malmö
Set the city and you see only Malmö profiles. Widening to Copenhagen is the obvious next step and the one that needs care — it is thirty-five minutes away and in another country, so check which side a profile actually lives on and which side its paperwork would run through.
Full biodata, openly
Education, profession, biradari, sect, family type, parents’ occupations and written preferences are all visible to members. Nothing important is held back behind a paywall.
Photos stay locked
Nobody in Malmö or anywhere else sees a photograph or a number until that member personally taps Accept. That rule has no exceptions and no administrative override.

The six questions a Malmö family asks first
Which country is he registered in
Living in Malmö and working in Copenhagen is ordinary here. Which side he is registered on decides which country’s spouse rules apply, and they are not comparable.
Rosengård, Hyllie or the Limhamn end
Three quite different parts of a small city — older municipal housing, newer development by the bridge, and the quieter western edge. Ask which, because the rent decides the application.
Are both over twenty-one
Sweden requires both partners to be over twenty-one for a partner permit. Denmark’s own rule is twenty-four. Neither is eighteen.
Whose name is on the tenancy
Housing must be held for at least a year and be large enough, and living in a parent’s home does not count on the Swedish side at all.
How are the two families related
Since 1 July 2026 a cousin match with a Swedish side needs legal advice first. Do not assume a Danish relative’s experience answers it.
Biradari and sect
Caste and sect are open fields on every profile, so you can filter before you approach rather than after an awkward conversation.

Searching from Malmö, in practice
If you are looking locally
Set your city to Malmö and leave the country filter on Sweden. Most families searching within Malmö also open the search to the nearby cities listed below, because the pool inside any one city is smaller than people expect and a two-hour drive is not an obstacle to a good match.
Filter on biradari and sect first if those matter to your family, then on profession and education. Doing it in that order saves the conversation that ends badly at the third meeting.
If you are looking for a match from Pakistan
Open the country filter to Pakistan and set the residency field on your own side to citizen or permanent resident. Then answer the question this city makes unavoidable: is the sponsor registered in Sweden or in Denmark. Everything after that — the minimum age, the money test, the housing rule, the waiting time — comes from whichever of the two it is, and they are not similar. Settle that first and the rest of the conversation becomes straightforward.
What is open on every Malmö profile
- Age, height, marital status and children
- Sect, biradari and mother tongue
- City, area and residency status
- Education, field of study and profession
- Family type, family class, parents’ occupations, siblings
- Written partner preferences, in their own words
What stays locked
- Photographs, until that member accepts your request
- The WhatsApp number, until a connection is accepted
- The email address and the exact address, always
Public cards on this page carry a reference such as BM-PK-1042 rather than a name, and none of it is written into the page itself — the listings arrive after the page loads, from a feed marked noindex, so no member is filed in a search engine under their own biodata.
Photo requests are free. A number request uses one connection token, which is returned in full if the other side declines.

Nearby cities
Copenhagen is around thirty-five minutes across the bridge, Gothenburg about three hours and Stockholm around four and a half. Copenhagen is the closest and the one that needs the most care, because nothing on this page about Swedish rules applies on the Danish side. Lund and Helsingborg do not yet have pages of their own; tell us if that is where your family is.
