What a Gothenburg rishta actually involves
None of this is legal advice. The Swedish rules below come from the Migration Agency, the Tax Agency and Kammarkollegiet, and several of them were rewritten during 2026. Figures move with the calendar year, so check the current ones before you rely on them, and take advice on your own case.
Hisingen, Angered and a town called Mölndal
Gothenburg on a profile covers a river, an island and at least one separate municipality.
Angered and Bergsjön sit in the north-eastern suburbs, up the hill from the city, and are where most of the older Pakistani settlement is — cheaper housing, municipal housing stock, and the densest concentration of migrant institutional life in western Sweden. Hisingen is the big island on the far side of the Göta river, industrial in character, with the port and the shipyard legacy on it. Mölndal, immediately south, is not Gothenburg at all: it is its own municipality with its own council, its own housing queue and its own registration counter, and a steady number of families there describe themselves as Gothenburg because for every purpose except paperwork they are.
Ask which of the three, and ask how long the journey is to wherever the rest of the family lives. A bride who lands in Angered when her only relatives in Sweden are in Mölndal has a longer week than anyone described to her.
The mosque at the foot of Ramberget
The largest congregation in the city is the Gothenburg Mosque, built at the foot of Ramberget on Hisingen and opened on 16 June 2011. It has around two thousand square metres of interior, cost sixty-seven million kronor to build, is Sunni, and has separate prayer halls for men and women alongside conference and lecture rooms and an ablution area.
Its presence on Hisingen is worth noting for a practical reason rather than a sentimental one: Hisingen is one of the areas Pakistani families here actually live in, so for once the main congregation and the community are in the same place. But as in the rest of Sweden it is a general Sunni congregation and not a South Asian one, and a family whose religious life runs through a particular maslak should ask the specific question rather than assume the building answers it.
The question with legal consequences is separate and should be asked early. In Sweden a nikah is a legally valid marriage only if the officiant is authorised by Kammarkollegiet and his congregation holds the right to perform legally valid ceremonies; Kammarkollegiet authorises the individual, and the community must obtain the right first and then apply for each of its officiants. So before a date is fixed, establish whether the person who would conduct this nikah is authorised. If not, the ceremony is religious only and a civil marriage is needed as well — and it is the civil marriage the Migration Agency will want to see.
An engineering payslip against a residual test
Gothenburg is an engineering and logistics city, and the Swedish maintenance requirement interacts with that in a way families consistently misread.
Sweden does not set a salary threshold. It asks what is left. The person in Sweden must have regular income — salary, income from their own business, or sickness benefit — and the Agency works out whether, after tax and after the rent is paid, enough remains each month to cover food, clothing, hygiene, telephone and insurance for everyone in the household. For a first-time application in 2026 the figure that must remain is 8,116 kronor for a single adult and 13,408 kronor for a couple living together, with further amounts per child by age. Money or taxable assets enough to support the household for two years can be used instead of income.
Three consequences follow, and all three are specifically Gothenburg problems.
The first is that rent and pay are a single sum. A man in a newer flat in central Gothenburg can fail where the same man in older municipal stock in Angered passes, on identical wages. Before anyone promises anything to a family in Pakistan, do the subtraction with the actual rent notice in hand.
The second is agency work. Industrial, warehouse and port employment in this region runs heavily through staffing firms, and income from subsidised employment, unemployment insurance and activity grants generally does not count at all. Regular income from a direct contract is a far stronger position than the same monthly figure arriving through a bemanningsföretag on rolling assignments. Ask which it is. It is not a rude question; it is the question the Agency is effectively asking.
The third is that shift pay is uneven. A month with overtime and a month without look very different, and what the Agency is assessing is regularity as much as amount. Three or four consecutive payslips tell the truth better than a good one.
There is an exemption from the maintenance requirement for a Swedish, EU, EEA or Swiss citizen who is married to or cohabiting with the applicant in a well-established relationship, for example after a long period of living together. A marriage arranged this year is not that, so for most new rishtas the exemption is not available and the subtraction has to be done.
If either side has been married before
Second-marriage rishtas are common in this community and Sweden handles them cleanly, provided the documents exist.
Being already married or in a registered partnership is one of the three impediments the Swedish Tax Agency checks before any marriage here, alongside being under eighteen and being closely related. Where one party is not registered in Sweden, the Agency wants a marital status certificate — preferably issued within the last four months — showing the person is not currently married, and where there was an earlier marriage, the divorce decree or the death certificate of the former spouse.
For a Pakistani file that is good news, because the Pakistani process produces exactly those documents: the talaq notice to the Union Council and the certificate that the divorce has taken effect, or a decree from the family court in a khula. Collect them, get them attested, and have them translated. A divorced profile with the certificate in hand is in a materially better position than one relying on an account of what happened, and on this site that is worth saying to both sides early rather than late.
Two cautions belong beside it. Sweden has not recognised forced marriages since the 2004 reform, and marriages from 1 January 2019 onward are not recognised where either spouse was under eighteen at the time — which can matter when an earlier marriage is being untangled rather than a new one arranged. And a marriage by proxy has not been recognised since 2014 where either party had their habitual residence or nationality in Sweden, so a nikah conducted by wakeel while the Gothenburg side attends by telephone produces no Swedish marriage at all. Both parties present, in person.
The two-year permit, and what happens at the end of it
A partner permit in Sweden is not the finish line, and the second application is the one families are least prepared for.
The first permit runs for a maximum of two years, never longer than the passport, and is extendable. Where the sponsor in Sweden holds only a temporary permit, the partner may be given a permit for the same period as the sponsor’s, and the sponsor must in any case have lived in Sweden on a permit for at least two years before the application is made.
At the extension, two things change in the couple’s favour. The Agency can take the household’s income into account rather than the sponsor’s alone, so the wife’s earnings count once she is working. And a transitional set of lower figures applies where the permit was granted before 1 October 2026 and the extension application reaches the Agency by 1 October 2027 — 6,243 kronor for a single adult and 10,314 for a couple, against the first-time 8,116 and 13,408. Where the permit was granted after 1 October 2026, or the extension is registered after 1 October 2027, the first-time amounts apply instead.
The practical reading for a Gothenburg household: find out which side of 1 October 2026 your permit falls on, diarise the extension so it lands before October 2027 if the transitional figures help you, and get the wife into employment in the first year both because it is good for her and because it is the thing that moves the second application. The relationship has to be continuing, and it has to be evidenced — shared address, shared life, the ordinary paper trail of a household.
Agree the fees too. Two thousand kronor for an adult application, a thousand for a child, and nothing returned if the answer is no. Over a first permit and an extension that is real money, and a family who decided in advance who pays it does not fall out about it later.
