Chiniot was part of this district until 2009 and is its own district now, which is worth knowing when an older relative says Jhang and means a town that is no longer in it. The Sial name runs through the whole district and carries the most weight in it. Heer was a Sial, and in Jhang that is not decoration — it is the shape of the place. Alongside the Sials are Baloch-descended families settled along the river for generations, Ranjha families through the Chenab belt and around Shorkot, and Kharal, Bhatti, Rajput, Arain, Awan, Jat, Qureshi and Syed households throughout. The other thing a Jhang family establishes early is sect. This district is more mixed than most of Punjab, and families here are precise about it in a way a Lahore or Faisalabad family often is not.
