Nursing is among the most exportable qualifications Pakistan produces, with strong demand in the Gulf, the UK and Ireland. It is also shift work, and the night rota is the thing families most often fail to think through.

Profession is one of the first things families filter on here, and for good reason: it decides income, hours, whether the couple will move, and how much of the week they will actually see each other. Our profession list runs to more than three hundred entries across twenty groups, so “Nurse” means what it says rather than being lumped into a vague category.

The questions that actually matter

What is the shift pattern?

Nights, weekends and rotating rotas are normal. A family expecting her home each evening should say so now.

Is an overseas move intended?

NMC registration for the UK or the Gulf licensing routes are common and take time.

Government or private hospital?

Government brings security and a pension; private often pays better.

The commonest problem in this category is a qualification or position in progress being described as complete. It is rarely outright dishonesty and usually optimism, but it changes the proposal materially. Ask which stage, which year and which institution, and accept documents rather than descriptions.

Beyond the profession

A job title tells you what someone does for eight hours. It tells you nothing about the household you would be joining, which is what the marriage is actually about.

The household

Joint, nuclear or extended. Who else lives there, and where the couple will live in the first year specifically — ideally written into column 17 of the nikah nama rather than left to goodwill.

The hours

Shifts, call rotas, site postings, travel and month-end. A family expecting someone home by six should not be matched with a career that cannot deliver it.

Money, plainly

Whether income is salaried or from a family business, whether it is shared between brothers, and what is expected of a working spouse’s earnings. Her salary is hers.
