Registering your nikah: the certificate every visa will ask for

A nikah is valid when it is performed. It is provable when it is registered. Those are two different days, and families routinely discover the gap at the worst moment.

A nikah performed correctly is a valid marriage from the moment it is performed. Registration does not create the marriage. What registration creates is proof — and proof is what every embassy, every bank, every passport office and every court will ask you for, usually at short notice.

Families discover this in a predictable sequence. The nikah happens. The nikah nama is signed and somebody puts it in a cupboard. Eight months later a spouse visa application asks for a government marriage certificate and nobody has one, because nobody ever took the form to the union council.

The two documents, and why you need both

The nikah nama

The printed form signed on the day, filled in by a licensed nikah registrar, carrying the mehr columns, the witnesses and any special conditions. This is the primary record of what was actually agreed. Keep an original. Not a photocopy, not a photograph — an original, in the bride's own keeping.

The computerised marriage registration certificate

Issued by NADRA on the basis of the union council's register, in English, bearing a machine-readable number. This is the document foreign missions accept. The nikah nama alone, in Urdu, handwritten, is regularly queried and sometimes refused.

The sequence

  1. The registrar records the nikah. A licensed nikah khwan or registrar completes the nikah nama and enters it in the union council register. In law this is his duty, not yours. In practice, confirm he has done it rather than assuming.
  2. The union council issues the registration. The marriage is entered in the municipal record for the area where the nikah took place.
  3. You apply to NADRA for the computerised certificate. Normally through a NADRA registration centre, with the nikah nama, both CNICs and the union council's record.
  4. For anything abroad, you attest it. The usual chain is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the embassy or consulate of the country concerned. Each step has its own fee and its own queue.

What goes wrong, and when

The registrar was not licensed

An imam who performs a nikah is not necessarily a licensed registrar. If he is not, the nikah may be perfectly valid and still be entirely absent from any register. Ask, before the day, whether the person conducting the nikah is licensed for that union council. It is a reasonable question and a licensed registrar will not be offended by it.

The spelling

A name spelled on the nikah nama in a way that does not match the CNIC, or a date of birth that does not match, will stop a visa application dead. Check every field against the identity documents on the day, before signatures. Correcting a registered record afterwards is a far longer process than checking it in advance.

Nikah abroad, rukhsati in Pakistan, or the reverse

Where the nikah takes place in one country and the couple will live in another, you need the marriage recognised in both. A nikah performed in Pakistan generally needs the NADRA certificate plus attestation for the destination country. A nikah performed abroad usually needs registration with the Pakistani mission there if it is to be recognised in Pakistan. Start this before the wedding, not after.

The delay nobody budgets for

Between the union council entry, the NADRA certificate, Foreign Office attestation and embassy attestation, families routinely lose two to three months. Spouse visa processing starts after that, not during it. If the plan is for the bride to join her husband abroad within the year, the paperwork has to begin the week of the nikah.

If you are marrying across borders

Our guide to spouse visas for the UK, Canada, the USA and the Gulf sets out what each route asks for and how long each actually takes. The one thing common to all of them is this certificate. Every other document in the application is arguable; this one is not.

Among our overseas members, immigration and residency status is a field on the profile from the first day rather than a question raised at the fourth meeting — you can see every field we ask for on what a profile shows, and browse by country from the country pages.

A short checklist

  • Confirm the registrar is licensed for that union council, before the day.
  • Check every name and date against the CNICs before anyone signs.
  • Take an original nikah nama away with you. The bride keeps one.
  • Apply for the NADRA certificate within weeks, not months.
  • If anything international is planned, begin attestation immediately.
  • Scan everything and keep the scans somewhere neither family controls alone.
This is general information, not legal advice. Procedure varies between provinces and between union councils, and rules change. Confirm the current requirements with your union council, your lawyer, or the relevant mission before you rely on any of it.
